Although aging the tobacco before a cigar is rolled does allow the tobacco to ferment and take on new flavors, water has to be added after the aging process and before the cigar is rolled. Once a cigar is rolled then the water will react with the tobacco and turn into ammonia. Some resting is always required before being shipped but the longer it rests the more the true flavors can take center stage. This is why we built our Vintage room at Casa de Montecristo back in 2009. We can age certain cigars after they have been rolled and give them time to release the ammonia and develop the natural flavors that were masked.
